CIFEJ Project “Film in Schools” in Mumbai, India, 24 – 28 April 2018

This year workshop “Teaching the Teachers” was organized from 24th to 28th April 2018 in Mumbai, India. After the first one held in Iran’s capital city Tehran, in February 21th  to 25th, 2016, and a few introducing one-day workshops held in the meantime in several other countries, it was the second major “Teaching the Teachers” workshop as the part of CIFEJ project “Film in Schools”, which was approved during CIFEJ GA in Beijing 2014.
This time, Prof. Dragan Milinkovic Fimon, author and the principal instructor of “Film in Schools”, and CIFEJ Vice President, was preparing Mumbai training with his local assistant Prof. Archana Kelkar-Deshmukh, a new CIFEJ member and a respected Film Writer, Creative Producer and Professor at Faculty for Theatre, University of Mumbai.
Mumbai “Film in Schools” Workshop was organized by Social Film Foundation of India (SoFFI) with the support of CIFEJ.
23 participants were carefully chosen on the basis of previous experience and an exclusive individual questionnaire out of about 300 school teachers.
 During the very interactive sessions of workshop many topics were discussed: What is Film Literacy? What's the difference between Media Literacy and Film Education? Who can teach Cinema in the schools? What are approaches to Film Education? And so on. In order to better understand the importance on how to teach about the contemporary media, two separate courses named “Looking in Children Cinema” and “Teaching in Media Era” were organized inside the workshop “Teaching the teachers”.
The last day of the workshop concluded with a Certificate Ceremony in presence of Mr. B.S. Borwankar, President and Mr Kedar Joshi, Secretary of Brahman Shikshan Manadal (Mumbai Educational Institute), Mr Mandar Vaidya, Secretary of Mulund Gymkhana, Mr. Rajeev Acharya, International Film Consultant and Social Film Foundation trustees. Ceremony was led by Er. Nitin Kumbhare, the initiator of this project in India.
During the Certification ceremony almost all of 23 participants demonstrated undoubted will and readiness to continue with CIFEJ activities in future. They believed that the useful information, knowledge and skills gained from this workshop, can be most useful not only for their schools but also intended to introduce the project in several other cities as well. Many have already confirmed their interest in further preparation and implementation of the project “Film in Schools”.
